My million thanks to Selden Bell for bringing SDSS DR12 database into Celestia. No other 3D universe map has this database yet; not Universe Sandbox, not WWT, not even Digital Universe. Please keep updating as more data get released.
This is a truly remarkable add-on. It's amazing to see the large-scale "frothy" sponge-like structure of the universe. The sense of scale is mind-boggling.
It would be cool indeed to actual render some of these as actual images of galaxies as time goes on.
For me this is definitely the single-most significant addon to celestia. Others may be more educational or entertaining or even both, but this one is nothing less than mind-boggling. I really do like “hugeness”. Every now and then I use to start celestia just to stroll around the solar system, look for pioneer 10 or voyager 2 (and then look back to the sun...) or compare the diameter of vv cephei with the size of our solar system and so on.
I always end up activating “nebulae” in the options and then slowly zooming out... and once more I'm stunned, fascinated, slightly uneasy and humbled at the same time. Very, very inspiring. Thanks a lot for this!
