| Educational Activities - Newly revised for 2007
Note:
The MS-Word-documents only work with Celestia 1.4.1 or Celestia-ED 1.4.1. and will not work with 1.5.0. Imagine being able to take control of your own "hyperdrive" spacecraft and fly to any part of our amazing universe you wish, at any time in history. Visualize looking out your ship window at a vista of galaxies, stars, nebula, black holes, planets, moons, asteroids, comets and spacecraft. Envision the excitement of not only seeing but also hearing your ship's sounds and many of the environmental sounds present at places you visit. Then, consider being provided a comprehensive and detailed written Astronomy lesson on what you were seeing and hearing! Welcome to Celestia Educational Activities for 2007! Using Celestia's sophisticated space simulation graphics and programming, Celestia Educational Activities provide you the ability to personally navigate above the surfaces of stars, visit rotating black holes, fly into nebula, pass through Saturn's rings, follow the Huygens spacecraft down to Titan, dock with a giant space station of the future, see our newest dwarf planet "Eris" or witness the formation of our moon billions of years ago. Celestia Educational Activities represent 12 detailed tours of space to over 300 destinations. Each journey is provided free of charge, and consists of an Activity document written in MS Word format, plus a separate Student Worksheet that can be printed in advance and completed for a grade if desired. The Activity document will guide you through the complete journey and gives you all instructions for operating Celestia. Activity journeys are comprehensive and range from 1 hour to 4 hours per journey. They are ideal for users of all ages, for home or school computer lab use in grades 7 - 12 (ages 12 - 18) and in introductory college courses as a valuable tool in the visualization and understanding of Astronomy and of our Universe. These Activities require the use of Microsoft Word 2000 or later. If you do not have MS Word installed on your computer, Microsoft has provided a free MS Word Viewer program for Windows and MAC that will open and read our Activities. You can download it by clicking here. Simply double-click on it to install it onto your computer. If you do use MS Word Viewer with our Activities, make sure to read the Letter to Users and Educators enclosed below for some important tips. NEW FOR 2007: Celestia Educational Activities have been updated for 2007 to incorporate advances and additions to our knowledge of the universe, and our solar system within it. The Activities require a customized version of Celestia called "Celestia 141-ED". You must download this version of the program and install it on your computer before taking any journey (see links below). It will install into a different folder and will not interfere with any other Celestia installation you may have. As new versions of Celestia are released, they will be modified for Activity use and will appear below. NOTE: These Activities can also work with the "official" version of Celestia 1.4.1, however, none of the sound effects or overlay textures will function unless you download the customized Celestia141-ED version below. IMPORTANT NOTE: If you have installed Celestia Educational Activities in the past, you will not have to reinstall all files again. Instead, we have included an "update" file below. It is named Celestia-ED-07_updates.zip. Simply download it, unzip it directly into your Celestia-ED folder, and your Activity files will all be updated for 2007. If you have not yet installed Celestia Educational Activities onto your computer, please first download and install one of the customized versions of Celestia141-ED listed below that matches your operating system. It will install into a new folder named "Celestia-ED". Please leave that folder in place and do not change its name. All Activity documents and files must install only into Celestia-ED. Next, click on and download the Letter to Users and Educators. It will give you more detailed information on how to enjoy these activities both at home and/or in a classroom setting. Then, download, unzip and install the General-Educational download into the Celestia-ED folder. Finally, select one or more Educational Activities, download and unzip them into the Celestia-ED folder, and enjoy the awesome educational power of Celestia to take you into space. For your convenience, all Activities and files to enjoy them have been packaged onto a 2-CD set that will effortlessly autoinstall onto your computer or a full classroom of computers. No downloading, unzipping or sequential installation is needed. The CD set is available for sale for a modest fee. Class Licenses are available for a modest increment in price.
